Mini-breaks provide the balm for busy lives

Epic dreamy vacations might sound like the ultimate balm for a busy life. But the euphoria doesn’t stick around for long. According to a study in Applied Research in Quality of Life, the revitalizing effects of your fabulous getaway start fading faster than your suntan – maxing out at a mere two weeks.

But here’s the game-changer: happiness peaks when you’re eagerly anticipating your vacation (not when you’re lounging poolside with a cocktail, believe it or not.) Picture this – the sheer bliss of counting down the days until you’re sipping that first mojito. The researchers claim that multiple short breaks sprinkled throughout the year bring more joy than the grand spectacle of a single extended holiday.

This means mini-breaks might hold the key to happiness. They require less planning, are kinder on the wallet, and invite you to savour more of these bite-sized moments of joy. According to Associate Professor Jan Packer from The University of Queensland, writing in the Annals of Tourism Research Empirical Insights, says that short breaks are super-effective. Mini escapes are not only rejuvenating but also powerhouse tools for restoring focus. Forget the hassle of international travel – significant benefits await in a familiar setting without the hefty environmental and other costs. Still on the fence about embracing the mini-break revolution? Read on for a dose of inspiration on where to go and what to do.

Lazy beach break

Just a hop, skip, and splash away from Sydney’s CBD, you’ll find the sunny Northern Beaches. Along this 30-kilometre stretch of coastal paradise, destinations like Manly and Palm Beach sparkle like jewels, inviting you to bask in their natural beauty. From golden sands to secluded rock pools, sweeping cliffs to lush rainforests, river inlets, and mangroves – this is a coastal haven like no other.

But it’s not just about soaking up the sun – the marriage of beach and bushland opens up a world of activities for short stay visitors. Surfing, snorkeling, kayaking, boating, stand-up paddleboarding, and hiking are just a taste of the adventure awaiting you. And here’s the secret: research suggests that immersing yourself in nature triggers a state of “soft fascination,” amplifying the restorative benefits of your break. It captures your attention while still leaving room for that blissful headspace needed for reflection. To extend your experience, check into Barrenjoey House for some ultra-luxe beachside living.

Luxury spa retreat

Perched in the Adelaide Hills, Sequoia Lodge is the latest addition to Mount Lofty Estate. Named for the enormous 170-year-old sequoia tree which stands upon the site, the lodge has 14 open-plan suites, all furnished in warm earthy tones and featuring panoramic views over the valley. There are multiple restaurants onsite, and some intriguing vegan offerings, such as chimichurri cauliflower.

Those seeking health and wellness can join guided nature hikes along the Heysen Trail, surrounded by the largest remaining koala population in the world. Other relaxing diversions include the artesian spring-fed hot pools, an infinity pool and the onsite Gate Keepers Day Spa. Slip into one of three treatment spaces for a signature spa ritual or perhaps a facial using Jurlique products. It’s all about keeping it local: for more than three decades, Jurlique has grown and hand-harvested botanicals at its biodynamic farm in Mount Barker, just a stone’s throw from the estate.

Adventure in the wilderness

Prepare for a hiking escapade like no other on Lord Howe Island, a whimsical crescent-shaped haven located 600 kilometres off Australia’s east coast. Despite its seemingly remote location, this natural gem is just a two-hour flight from Sydney. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Lord Howe Island boasts stunning beauty and biodiversity without the usual suspects like snakes, poisonous spiders, dangerous sharks, crocodiles, or stingers.

Spanning a mere eleven kilometers in length and two kilometers in width, this island paradise offers a myriad of well-marked trails. From leisurely seaside strolls to challenging mountain climbs, there’s a path for every adventurer. Short-stay guests may not seek to conquer the extensive 45-kilometer Seven Peaks Walk, but alternatives abound, including the renowned 875-meter Mt Gower climb, hailed as one of the world’s premier day treks.

Recent research in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine emphasizes the health perks of hiking in nature, such as lowered blood pressure, reduced stress, a stronger immune systems, and an uplifted mood. After a day of trailblazing, unwind in one of Capella Lodge’s nine luxury beach-house style suites and pamper yourself with a muscle-soothing session at the on-site spa.

Upmarket city escape

Once considered a mere gateway to the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Brisbane, the Sunshine State’s capital, has stepped into its own spotlight less than a decade before the 2032 Summer Olympics. Blessed with a subtropical climate, Brisbane provides a sophisticated urban escape, perfect for alfresco activities year-round.

Immerse yourself in luxury at the centrally located W Hotel Brisbane, boasting a design that mirrors the nearby river’s ebb and flow. The hotel’s vibrant aesthetic uplifts the spirits and be sure to order a drink at the poolside WET Deck bar, which delivers delicious cocktails as well as some of the city’s best views. With attractions like the Museum of Brisbane, South Bank’s art galleries, shops, and restaurants across the river, and the serene Roma Street Parkland just a stroll away, you’re at the heart of all the action.

Some of my favourite restaurants – including Stanley at Howard Smith Wharves and Pilloni at West End, are just an easy cab or uber journey away.

Cruise into serenity

Experience the profound impact of nature as a great equalizer with RealNZ, a New Zealand tour operator dedicated to sharing the transformative power of natural spaces. Among their offerings is an overnight cruise on Doubtful Sound, the South Island’s deepest and second-longest fjord.

Navigate through Lake Manapouri, traverse dense rainforests over Wilmot Pass, and delve into the heart of the unspoiled Fiordland National Park. Known as the ‘Sound of Silence,’ Doubtful Sound is home to unique deep-sea species like black coral in relatively shallow waters. Adventurous souls can explore the shoreline by kayak or tender boat, witnessing thundering waterfalls and spotting bottlenose dolphins, fur seals, and penguins. While day trips are an option, investing extra time to truly unplug and soak in the tranquility is well worth it.

Gastronomic getaway

Embark on a culinary journey where seasonal and sustainable delights not only satisfy the stomach but also nourish the soul. Nestled less than two hours away from Melbourne, the Victorian city of Bendigo has evolved from a gold rush town into a haven for food enthusiasts. Its culinary prowess was officially recognized in 2019 when it earned the prestigious title of Australia’s first UNESCO City of Gastronomy.

Bendigo’s vibrant food culture and commitment to the ‘paddock to plate’ philosophy come alive through various hands-on experiences. Join a food fossicking tour, guiding you from the farm gate to the restaurant table, or partake in the unique pick-your-own adventure at PepperGreen Farm, formerly the Chinese market gardens.

A slew of new dining, drinking, and lodging establishments have sprouted. To make your choices easier, Bendigo Tourism has crafted an interactive map, empowering visitors to curate their own delectable trail through the region. For a cozy retreat, consider the recently unveiled Bendigo Ernest Hotel – a 12-room boutique oasis located on the historic site of the city’s oldest bank. It’s the perfect haven to unwind and savour the flavours of Bendigo.
